DNS Spoofing
Send a hostname to an address you choose, for testing a server before its DNS changes or pointing an app at a local machine.
DNS Spoofing maps a hostname to an IP address you choose. Use it to try a new server before its DNS record changes, to test a specific edge node, or to point an app at a machine on your network without touching the app's configuration.
How it works on each platform#
- iPhone and iPad. WireLens answers DNS queries inside its local VPN, so a matching hostname resolves to your address for every app on the device while capture runs.
- Mac. WireLens substitutes the address it dials for matching captured hosts. It does not change your Mac's system DNS, so apps that do not go through WireLens are unaffected.
Create a rule#
Open Tools ▸ DNS Spoof and add a hostname and an IPv4 address. The first enabled rule whose host matches wins. A blank pattern and a bare * never match, so a half-filled rule cannot redirect everything.
Tips#
- For HTTPS, the certificate still has to match the hostname. If your test server's certificate is for a different name, the app will refuse it unless the host is decrypted by WireLens, which presents its own certificate for the original hostname.
- To send traffic to a different hostname instead of an address, use Map Remote.
Free and Pro#
